Neighborhood Listserv

The listserv is GENA’s email list for Glennwood Estates residents. About 380 neighbors use it to find a plumber, report a lost dog, give away a bookcase and hear about parties.

What neighbors post

Recommendations

Plumbers, roofers, sitters and doctors that neighbors have used.

Events

Block parties, yard sales, board meetings and anything else happening nearby.

Crime and safety

Break-ins, suspicious activity, lost pets and road closures.

Borrowing

A ladder for the weekend, a wheelbarrow, or a bookcase that needs a new home.

Every message goes to every member, so keep the subject matter and language right for a neighborhood audience.

Posts that aren’t allowed

  • Anything about a child, unless each child’s parent or guardian has agreed.
  • Photos of crime suspects, unless you’ve checked with the Decatur Police Department first.
  • Ads or promotion of a business for personal gain.
  • Politics, religion or other contentious subjects. A factual announcement of an event’s date, time and place is fine, with no advocacy or commentary.

Replying

Replies go to the person who posted, which is usually what you want. Use reply-all only when everyone needs your answer. “Thanks” and “Agree” go to the sender.

Search before you ask

The list has more than 6,500 conversations, and someone has probably already recommended a roofer. Members can search them on the groups.io website.

How much email you get

In your groups.io settings, choose each message as it’s sent, a daily digest, or no email at all. To leave the list, email the unsubscribe address; the message can be blank.
